Fried Green Tomatoes
🍅 Ingredients
4 medium green tomatoes
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup cornmeal (or use ½ cornmeal + ½ breadcrumbs for extra crunch)
2 eggs
½ cup buttermilk (or regular milk)
1 tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
½ tsp paprika
¼ tsp cayenne pepper (optional, for a little kick)
Vegetable oil, for frying
🔪 Instructions
1. Prep tomatoes:
Slice green tomatoes into ½-inch thick rounds.
Pat dry with paper towels.
2. Prepare dredging stations:
Bowl 1: Flour seasoned with salt, pepper, paprika, and cayenne.
Bowl 2: Eggs whisked with buttermilk.
Bowl 3: Cornmeal (or cornmeal + breadcrumbs mixture).
3. Coat tomatoes:
Dredge each tomato slice in flour (shake off excess).
Dip into egg mixture.
Coat well with cornmeal mixture, pressing lightly so it sticks.
4. Fry:
Heat ½ inch of oil in a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat.
Fry tomato slices in batches, about 2–3 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy.
Drain on paper towels.
5. Serve:
Sprinkle with a little extra salt.
Best enjoyed hot with ranch dressing, remoulade, or a creamy garlic dip.
